DIY Filters For Reusable K-Cups
If you are like me, you hate to pay the price for those Keurig type coffee pods. And those reusable coffee pods just let to much sediment through. Frustrating isn't it? Well I was shopping at Walmart and I found a box of filters that fit those little cups. But the price was eight bucks for a hundred that equals eight cents per cup. Not much of a savings.
So I got to thinking what could be cheaper. As I was shopping around, I found a package of those 8-12 cup filters that came 200 per bag. Better yet, they were made in the U.S.A.! So I bought them and went to work.
I discovered that a 4" circle was the right size for my cup. When I folded about 5 or 6 filters in half it was 4". I then found a small bowl that was that size and drew a circle and cut them out. Once that was done I folded them a second time to find the center of the stack. I then pressed them down over my thumb to form a cone.
To store them I emptied a used K-cup and cleaned it out and pressed them in. It worked great. It allows the cones to keep their shape and stores them nicely. When you want to use one just pull out a filter and push it into you reusable cup. they line up nicely and are easy to fill. Once it is used, I just use a teaspoon and dig the filter out into the garbage and wash the cup.
It takes about an extra minute or two but the savings pay for it. For example, I have been buying a box of 96 cups at Walmart for 29 dollars. That comes to thirty cents a cup. I can get the same coffee in a can for eleven dollars and the can says it can make up to 240 cups. that comes to about 5 cents per cup. The package of 200 filters makes 400 k-cup filters at .005 cents. Do you see where I am going?
Personally, I'd rather pay 13 dollars for coffee and filters than 58 Dollars for two boxes of the K-cups. So if you are interested, I have the pics below.
Sometimes, I amaze even myself. (I'm sure someone else has already done this.)
